Predicting which patients with claudication are likely to deteriorate to critical limb ischaemia is difficult since there is a lack of evidence related to lower limb prognosis. WebPAD can be managed without surgery in the early stages, namely Rutherford categories 0-3 (see above “What is Peripheral Artery Disease?” for an explanation of the Rutherford categories). Once PAD has progressed beyond Rutherford 3 (i.e. develop rest pain or ulcers/gangrene) surgery becomes necessary to prevent amputation of the leg.
