The gel keeps the vaginal pH at its normal low level in the presence of sperm, so it's more difficult for the sperm to move through the vagina and into the uterus to reach the egg. Without Phexxi on board, semen naturally raises the vaginal pH to allow it to move. WebThe benefit of this method is you can insert the sponge up to 24 hours prior to intercourse. However, you must leave the sponge in for at least six hours after intercourse. It's one of the more expensive forms of spermicide available.
