7 day Independent tour
The Vienna Woods and the “Magic Mountains” are found in the thermal and wine region of Lower Austria. The gentle hills of the Vienna Woods abruptly give way to the high plateaus of Rax and Schneeberg (Snowy Mountain). This traditional summer playground of the Austrian nobility is as enjoyable today as in the days of the Hapsburg Empire.
Day to Day Itinerary
Individual arrival at health resort Payerbach
Train-heritage trail Semmering
Take the first mountain train of the world to well known town of Semmering. The train-heritage trail explores the route of the Ghega-train, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, with striking viaducts crossing deep valleys and gorges and an idyllic, peaceful countryside.
High walk on Rax Plateau
Up to the Rax plateau at 2.200 m, where you can walk from cabin to cabin. Several options are available for every taste. Enjoy stunning views on the surrounding mountain world.
Across alpine pasture of Bodenwiesen to Puchberg
The demanding ascent to Waldburg-Anger cabin is followed by a comfortable walk across the huge high alpine pasture Bodenwiese, where the local farmers graze their cattle. Down into the valley on easy forest roads past little ponds. All the day you see mighty Schneeberg (Snowy Mountain) and behind you the Rax mountain. You could imagine yourself easily being in the central Alps.
By rack-railway up on Schneeberg
Today you take the famous rack-railway up to an elevation of more than 2.000 m. The summit is not far away and the views of the Alps amazing. Do not miss a local pastry called “Buchtel” at the middle-station – a delicious speciality!
By train to the foot of Hohe Wand (High Wall)
Through the forest up to Hohe Wand, a popular rock-wall for climbers. Don’t worry, we choose a comfortable climb. You can see almost to Vienna from the summit. Return by the ridge, past farms and small hamlets to Puchberg.
By train via Wiener Neustadt to Payerbach (or into Vienna).
