Roman sites and Van Gogh landscapes.
A tour in the heart of Gaul where you can discover the best Roman sites of France. You will cycle through the famous landscapes of Provence where you may recognize the most important of Van Gogh paintings.
A journey in the Camargue will complete this wonderful tour….
Individual arrival in Arles, the city of diabolical “ferias”, muse of artists and poets, known for its rich ancient and Romanesque heritage.
Arles–St. Maries de la Mer/Aigues Mortes (65 km).
We leave the city and we go into the delta of the Rhone, better known as “Camargue”, where nature still prevails over civilization. We will cycle among cane fields, salt lakes, flamingos, horses and bulls. We will stop in Saintes Maries de la Mer, and then we will continue towards the medieval fortress of Aigues Mortes.
Aigues Mortes– Nimes (40 km).
Back to civilization. Following streets with low traffic we reach the populated centre of Nimes; rich in art and history, it is also called the “Rome of France”, but it also reminds us of Spain with its arenas and bullfighting.
Nimes– Uzes (45 km).
After a tour of the city, surrounded by its Roman past, we will cycle up to the best preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe: Pont du Gard, a truly spectacular work.
You can refresh with a swim in the river Gard before reaching St. Hilaire or Uzes.
Uzes–Avignon (50 km).
Riding through gentle hills, today we will reach the capital of Provence. It was a papal city for nearly a century with seven popes elected here in the 1300’s, deciding the destiny of the Christian Church. A real open air museum. Before your arrival, stop at the beautiful ancient village of Villeneuve Les Avignon.
Avignon–Chateauneuf du Pape–Avignon (45 km).
We will cycle towards Châteauneuf-du-Pape, following quiet roads and surrounded by vineyards.
We cross the river Rhone at the height of Roquemaure and we will come back to Villeneuve along the banks of the Rhone.
Avignon–Arles (60 km).
After leaving the Palace of the Popes, we will cycle to the final destination of the tour, returning to Arles. Along the way, we cannot miss a stop at the famous Saint Remy de Provence and Les Baux de Provence, made famous throughout the world by Van Gogh’s paintings.
After breakfast, end of tour. Journey home or extend your stay in Europe.
