Day to Day Itinerary
Individual arrival at Seekirchen
on Lake Wallersee. Receive your pretour info pack, maps etc.
By train to Oberhofen, then hike to Eugendorf
By train you reach the German border, where Salzburg’s St Jame’s Route starts. First you walk past gentle green hills down to Lake Wallersee, then follow the lakeside trail to Eugendorf.
Eugendorf – Salzburg
A comfortable walk brings you downhill into Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and ecclesiastical monuments wait to be discovered. A detour to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg, is worth the effort.
Salzburg – Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall
This morning you walk across the city in the direction of Mt Untersberg. At the little town Großgmain you cross the German border to Rupert’s Winkl and afterwards you reach the Bavarian salt metropolis of Bad Reichenhall.
Bad Reichenhall – Unken
Today you follow the river Saalach back into the Province of Salzburg. Past Lake Salzachsee you walk deeper and deeper into the mountains. The hiking path generally follows the river, which sometimes gushes wildly through steep rock walls.
Unken – Waidring/St. Ulrich
At first you follow the river Saalach into the widening valley around Lofer, which retains much of the original charm of a small alpine village. In front of you the steep rocks of the mountain range Loferer Steinberge seem to scrape the sky. You cross over the Strubpass into the province of Tyrol.
Waidring/St. Ulrich – St. Johann
According to the route you walk on the dyke path to St. Johann or bypass past Lake Pillersee and St. Jacob’s church, to St. Johann in Tirol. This lovely ski resort town lies at the foot of the Kitzbuheler Horn.
