Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Journey to Krk Island

Privately organized journey by plane or car to your hotel on the Krk Island. The Valamar Koralj Romantic Hotel is a ten-minute walk away from the island capital of the same name above a quiet bay amidst a spicy scented pine wood.

Day 2

Krk Island (Cycling tour approx. 40 km/25 mi., max. 800 m/2.624 ft. difference in altitude)

For today we suggest a tour to the sleepy village of Stara Baška. On a smoothly rising road with little traffic you reach an altitude of 300 m. In clear weather you can enjoy an impressive view of the Kvarner Bay. In a fast descent you reach Stara Baška, welcoming you with its clean beach to take a swim. After that you take the same way back to Punat. From there it is worthwhile visiting the monastery island Košljun, which can only be reached by boat. The old Franciscan monastery houses an ethnographical as well as a richly equipped zoological collection. In one of the two chapels you may marvel at the biggest picture of Croatia painted by Francesco Ughetti. In the afternoon you may go for a nice stroll in the alleys of Krk, the island capital, and enjoy the numerous historical references of the place.

Day 3

Krk Island (Cycling tour approx. 60 km/37 mi., ca. 1000 m/3.280 ft. difference in altitude, highest point 300 m/984ft.)

Along minor roads and forest paths, be prepared for today’s cycling tour which leads you first to Vrbnik. This old fishing village is one of the strongholds of the glagolitical scripts; furthermore the wine (vine Žlahtina) cultivated here can only be found in one more place on the Croatian mainland. With only 51 cm (1.7 ft.) in width Vrbnik presents one of the narrowest alleys in the world, which certainly should be part of your stroll through the village. After that you cycle to Dobrinj; on your way there you pass a fantastic viewpoint – a “must” for each tourist. Afterwards, in nice weather you should take the steep slope to Soline, where a healthy mud bath may develop its beneficial as well as its cooling effect. A slight climb along the villages of Tribulje and Kras takes you back towards Krk.

Day 4

From Krk via Cres to Istria (Cycling tour max. 77 km/48 mi., ca. 1200 m/3.950 ft. difference in altitude, highest point 450 m/1.480 ft)

After having dropped your luggage for transport you cycle via Vrh to the ferry harbour of Valbiska. After a 45-minute crossing you reach the neighbouring island of Cres.

Long cycle tour (77 km): When having reached the main road after a steep ascent it is at your disposal to take a rewarding detour to the island’s capital of Cres town. Here a dreamy place with wonderful old parts, a famous Franciscan monastery, a beautiful promenade with fantastic beaches and a great meal welcomes you. Well strengthened you climb up a fantastic mountain pass with numerous view points, small deserted villages, and a nearly genuine jungle. The next place to go to is the ferry harbour of Porozina from where you cross to Brestova on the Istrian peninsula in 15 minutes. Here our transfer driver awaits you to take you to your hotel in Rabac.

Alternative (40 km): If you would like to spend more time on the island Cres you may as well stay in the town until 3 pm and then take the small boat directly to Rabac. This boat trip costs approx. 100 kuna (13 euro), to be paid on site. However, you have more time to enjoy the beautiful city, go swimming and have lunch and you even arrive earlier at the hotel in Rabac. Please talk about this alternative with one of our tour staff members on site one day in advance.

Day 5

From Rabac to Porec, (Cycling tour via Žminj approx. 70 km/44 mi. 850 m/2.780 ft. or via Pazin approx. 80 km/50 mi., ca. 1000 m/3.280 ft. difference in altitude)

The longer cycling tour of today takes you from Rabac to Poreč. We suggest two different alternatives: the first one along the Lim Fiord which carves 30 km (18,5 m.) into the Istrian peninsula. The fiord is a paradise-like countryside offering habitat for rare fishes and extraordinary palatable shells. Don’t miss tasting these local specialities in one of the idyllically situated restaurants. Via Klostar you finally reach Poreč.

The alternative route first takes you via Pazin to Gračišće. Today this medieval place on top of a hill is completely listed on a historic register, and for that very reason worthwhile an extended stroll. From there it is not too far to Pazin, the Istrian administrative main place. The history of Pazin covers a period of over 1000 years, and had been the residence of the Habsburg earldom for a long time. The castle that long ago inspired Jules Verne to write his novel Mathias Sandorf belongs to the biggest and best preserved throughout Istria. On hidden roads and through extended vineyards you finally reach Poreč, one of the most attractive towns of Croatia.

Day 6

Istria – around Porec

Poreč – one town – innumerable possibilities. Maybe you feel like having an easy day today: take your chance and cycle to one of the quiet bathing bays nearby or go on a shopping tour and enjoy relaxing in one of the excellent restaurants. But on no account miss visiting the famous Euphrasius-basilica, honoured with the world cultural heritage award. Today, there are, of course, endless opportunities to cycle. Thus you may visit the well-known stalactite cave of Baredine, go to Vrsar, the town of Casanova, or pedal along the Riviera coast of Poreč. We equip you with detailed information of the most interesting tours at your choice. Should you fancy a boat trip even to more distant places you may book a one-day excursion to lagoon-town of Venice (with a speed boat within 3 hrs).

Day 7

Istria (Cycling tour up to 90 Km/56 mi.)

Our suggestion for today is an Istrian round tour. From Poreč you can cycle via Višnjan deeper and deeper towards the centre of the peninsula. On your way you come along extended pastures on which the famous Istrian Boskarian cattle graze. The aim and climax of today’s tour is the medieval town of Motovun; situated on top of a hill, the town was in control over the important sales routes and the whole valley of Istria’s biggest river. The Motovun forest is a well-known place where the Istrian truffle can be found. In the late afternoon you will return to your hotel in Poreč.
