HORSE RIDE IN PATAGONIA

Day to Day Itinerary

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

You will be picked up in Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt, and transferred to Campo Aventura’s Riverside Lodge, along the banks of the Rio Cochamó. There, you can stretch your legs, meet your guides, review the route, and prepare for the trip of a lifetime! Enjoy a three-course dinner and cabana accommodation overnight.

Day 2

This morning calls for an early start, as we drive south along the mighty Rio Puelo to catch the ferry-boat transfer across Lago Tagua Tagua. On the other side of the trail, we check gear, horses, and supplies, and then saddle up for the first day’s ride – to the outpost of Rio Steffen. We will pitch camp and enjoy our first meal under the stars, at a local homestead. Overnight in tents.

Day 3

Today, the undulating trail will take us along the banks of the blue-green Rio Manso, across wooden bridges and towards more majestic views, as we head towards Torrentoso. We will enjoy a picnic lunch, and lots of snacks along the way. Time permitting, we can view the ancient rock paintings in the areas. We overnight in tents, on the farm of one of Campo Aventura’s huasos.

Day 4

Climbing even higher, today we will approach the deep glacier lake of Lago Vidal Gormaz. After lunching at one end of the lake, we ride along the eastern shore, with magnificent views, before arriving at our host family’s farm. A traditional asado dinner and campfire will regale us. Overnight in tents.

Day 5

Today, our horses get to take it easy – we will hike the slopes around the lake or try a spot of fishing, while the host family prepares a traditional dinner. Share the meal with them and camp again.

Day 6

After a lakeside breakfast, today we embark on the steep and challenging ride to the El Arco reserve – a protected area of old-growth Alerce forest. At times, we will hike behind the horses – and later enjoy our last night outdoors, in a tent.

Day 7

We embark on a slightly shorter ride after breakfast – arriving at Campo Aventura’s Mountain lodge, in the La Junta valley in time for a late lunch that will be awaiting us. We unload, freshen up with hot showers, and relax on the patio or by the wood stove. Overnight in lodge, with dinner and friends.

Day 8

Today, we will have a tough choice – choosing among a range of different activities to explore this spectacular granite-ringed valley. Should we hike? Swim in rock pools? Slide down the natural rockslide? Or just soak in the atmosphere and stock up on wonderful memories? Overnight at lodge.

Day 9

On our next to last day, we will be treated to more stunning scenery – as we ride back down the valley, through the native Valdivian rainforest, a lush, dense, and mystical place. We arrive back at Riverside Lodge, in time for afternoon tea – can enjoy a well-deserved complimentary sauna. Overnight in cabana with dinner.
