Vail Ski Resort was established in December, 1962 and is the second largest ski mountain in North America (after Whistler Blackcomb), welcoming approximately 1.6 million skiers and snowboarders annually. Vail is modeled on European ski towns, many of which are car-free. The town is partially pedestrianized and styled like a Bavarian Village. Vail operates the largest free shuttle bus system in the United States and all areas of Vail Valley are connected by frequent buses.

Vail offers three distinct areas of the mountain for skiing and snowboarding, each with their own features, including three terrain parks, seven bowls and 5,289 acres of freeride terrain. At seven miles wide, on an average day, there are only two skiers per acre, and on a busy day, only four!

Most lodges and condominiums are within walking distance of the shops, restaurants and ski lifts. There are two main resort centres, Vail Village and Vail Lionshead, which follow the Gore Creek River, a Gold Medal fishing stream.

In December 2000, Vail put the final touches on the second phase of its Blue Sky Basin terrain expansion, with the addition of its fourth new high-speed quad chairlift and the opening of an additional 125 acres of ski terrain in Pete’s Bowl. This brings Vail’s total count of high-speed lifts to 15, more than any other ski area in the United States. Vail’s crowning Blue Sky Basin terrain expansion provides a unique wilder experience unlike anything else found on Vail Mountain and now features 645 acres of intermediate to advanced terrain in its two world-class bowls.

Vail is located 120 miles west of Denver International Airport (2 hour transfer) and 35 miles east of Vail/Eagle County Airport (EGE) (45 minute transfer).
