The oldest Bulgarian winter resort is Borovets, with a history dating to 1896! Today Borovets is the second largest and most modern resort in Bulgaria. It is situated in the eastern part of Rila, huddled in pine forests 1390 meters above sea level (with the highest pistes at 2600 m).
The average temperature during the coldest month January is 4.8ºC. The slopes of Borovets normally have snow cover from mid December till April. Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria) is just 72 kilometers away.
Borovets has recently developed into a modern ski resort of high class with luxury hotels, restaurants, discos, shops and a good choice of pistes and lifts. The excellent skiing attracts thousands of mountain lovers from all over the world. There are 58 kilometers of ski pistes grouped in three regions: Sitnqkovo – Martinovi Baraki ; Markudjik; and Qstrebec. The pistes on Qstrebets are the best, and all of the competitions take place there! The resort has twice hosted World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing. Its biathlon track is one of the best in Europe.

LODGING IN BOROVETS The four-star Rila Hotel is the most impressive hotel in Borovets, with ski-in / ski-out convenience at the very bottom of the ski runs. Rila Hotel was completely renovated in 2001 and today it offers 256 double rooms, 266 standard suites (for up to 4 people), 2 superior suites and 2 lofts. All rooms and suites have balconies overlooking the mountain and are equipped with telephone, radio and satellite TV. The standard suites have also a living room with twin beds, small kitchenette and a refrigerator.
This grand new hotel has an excellent location right beside the ski lift, so is virtually ski in/ski out! The hotel offers its guests a longe, bar, Irish pub, restaurant, casino, indoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, Turkish steam bath, and gym. Buffet style breakfasts and dinners are included. Samokov Hotel is situated in the centre of the resort of Borovets (1300 m above the sea level), and just 50 m from the main gondola. It is an alpine style hotel, surrounded by old pine forests, offers pleasant atmosphere and first class service throughout the year. The hotel offers more than 300 rooms on 11 floors, with Sat TV, balcony, and telephone.
